Do Not Take Me for Granted:

Narratives of Mental Health and Self Harm in Popular YA Literature

Hello, all! Just wanted to update you all on our research!

For the past year, I have struggled with my mental health more than I ever have in my life. I have used that pain and all the hard work I have been doing to have a healthy relationship with myself to guide my research. This project takes a look at the way the top three most popular YA novels portray mental health and its correlation with self harm. This is a major issue in our society. Young people are invalidated every day when it comes to acknowledging their mental health. This is the narrative told in these three stories, however rather than encouraging students to fight for their right to live, these books tell a very different story.

Keep up with us as we explore how the three novels below portray the struggle of adolescent mental health. I will continue to keep you all up-to-date with my findings, thoughts, and analysis. Please feel free to contact me with any input, comments, or questions throughout the process at teachmesomething.contact@gmail.com!

I am proud to announce that this paper was published in the ALAN Review for the Spring 2020 issue! Thank you so much for your support!
